When you’re shopping pre-loved luxury, few things matter more than authenticity. And when it comes to Gucci, knowing how to verify what you're holding, especially with so many fakes on the market, is essential. Whether you’re a longtime reseller, a first-time buyer, or just curious, this guide will help you understand how to spot a fake Gucci bag and how to read those famous serial number tags.
Let’s start with the numbers, then move into hands-on checks you can use right away.
Understanding Gucci Serial Numbers
Gucci began using serial codes as early as the 1950s, starting with short “Brev” numbers. They phased those out in the 1970s and later introduced stamped codes in the late ’70s and ’80s. However, what we now recognize as the modern Gucci serial number format wasn’t standardized until the 1990s.
Inside most Gucci bags made from the 90s forward, you’ll find a rectangular leather tag sewn into the interior. On one side, the tag is embossed with “® GUCCI” and “made in italy” (in lowercase). Flip that tag over and you’ll see a two-line numeric code.

The top row is the style or model number
-
The bottom row is a supplier or batch code
Together, these numbers typically contain between 10 to 13 digits. There are no letters, hyphens, or date details included in Gucci’s serial codes, unlike other brands like Louis Vuitton. Instead, Gucci’s numbers are used for internal tracking and confirming that the style matches its original release.

Signs of an Authentic Gucci Bag
Here’s a breakdown of what to look for when checking a Gucci bag in person.
-
Serial Number Tag
The tag should be leather, clean-cut, and sewn into the lining. The front must include “® GUCCI” with “made in italy” underneath in all lowercase, centered, and evenly spaced. On the reverse side, the two rows of digits should be deeply stamped, consistent, and aligned. Authentic serial numbers are always numbers only, never letters or symbols. However remember if it is a vintage bag from the 70’s you likely will not see a serial number. -
Stitching and Craftsmanship
Gucci bags are carefully constructed. Look for neat stitching with no loose threads, perfectly cut leather, and no visible glue residue. Poor craftsmanship is often a sign of a fake. -
GG Monogram Details
The GG monogram canvas should be symmetrical, clean, and evenly spaced. One G faces forward while the other mirrors it. Patterns should align precisely at seams and edges. -
Hardware
The hardware on authentic Gucci bags is heavy, smooth, and often engraved with “GUCCI.” You’ll find this on zippers, clasps, and other metal details. Flaking or overly shiny finishes are a common red flag. -
Dust Bag and Controllato Card
Real Gucci bags typically come with a branded dust bag and a controllato card. The card should be white with “controllato” printed in lowercase. If your card has typos, odd fonts, or looks cheap, it may be fake. Keep in mind, however, that not all vintage Gucci bags include these items. -
QR Codes and Fabric Tags
Beginning around 2016, Gucci started including QR codes and black fabric tags with additional internal codes. These QR codes are not readable by standard apps but are encrypted and used by Gucci for internal verification. Their presence helps confirm authenticity in newer bags.

What About Vintage Gucci Bags?
Vintage bags made before the 1990s may not have a serial number at all. In earlier decades, Gucci used gold-stamped numbers or tags with different fonts and layouts. These styles can still be authentic even without a serial tag, but you’ll want to rely more heavily on the materials, logo placement, and construction to judge their authenticity. Older bags may also have rounded leather logo tabs, uppercase "MADE IN ITALY" stamps, or canvas linings with distinct patterns not seen in newer collections. I have an authentic vintage Gucci without the serial numbers and it is such a stunning piece. I love vintage Gucci pieces because they are very unique and there are so many different designs.
