A sweater can look lovely in a photo, but the small details help you decide whether it belongs in your wardrobe. Before you fall for the color or designer label, take a minute to check the fabric, the care instructions and the areas that get the most wear.
At Taylored Finds Indiana, we love giving quality pieces another chapter. That starts with knowing what you're buying and choosing something you'll enjoy wearing and caring for.
Start with the actual labels
Ask for clear photos of both the fabric-content label and the care label. The first tells you what the piece is made from. The second helps you understand the care routine that comes with it. Read both, even when the listing already says wool, silk or a blend.
A fiber name alone isn't enough to choose a cleaning method. Follow the instructions on the exact garment. Woolmark's care guidance makes checking the garment's care label the starting point for wool care.
For example, our Equipment Femme Roland sweater listing identifies a wool and silk piece with a snake-print front, listed as new with tags. That's a helpful starting point, but it doesn't mean every wool and silk sweater has the same care instructions. If the label isn't clear in the photos, ask before ordering. Inventory can change.
Look beyond a little surface fuzz
Pilling is the small fuzzy balls that form on a fabric's surface. Woolmark explains that rubbing during wear can cause pilling, including around a sweater's underarms and sleeves. It isn't the same thing as a hole or a broken yarn.
When you look at a resale listing, ask for close-ups of the underarms, cuffs, sides, neckline and hem. Look for thinning, loose stitches, holes, repairs and areas that seem stretched. A broad description such as “good condition” doesn't tell you which of those details are present.
Don't assume every mark will wash out or every worn area can be made like new. Decide whether you'd still want the sweater if the disclosed flaw stayed exactly as it is. If the price only feels right after a perfect repair, get an opinion and cost estimate first.
Ask whether the shape has changed
A size tag won't tell you whether a sweater has been shrunk, altered or stretched. Compare its current measurements with a similar knit you already wear comfortably. Focus on pit-to-pit, length and sleeves, and ask whether it was measured flat without stretching.
For a fitted style, check the hem and cuff measurements if those areas matter to you. For an intentionally relaxed style, compare the proportions as well as the chest width. A roomy body and short sleeves can still be the wrong fit for your preference. Our clothing measurement guide walks through those terms.
Choose a care routine that works for you
Would you happily follow the label's instructions, or would the sweater sit unworn because the care feels inconvenient? Include any professional cleaning or repair costs in your decision. A beautiful find should work for your real life.
For wool knits, Woolmark recommends folded storage. That is useful general guidance, but it doesn't replace the exact garment's label or advice from a cleaner when a label is missing or unreadable. If you can't confirm a safe care method, don't experiment just because a similar sweater was washable.
A message you can send before buying
“Hi! Could you share clear photos of the fabric-content and care labels, plus the underarms, cuffs and hem? Are there any holes, thinning areas, repairs, stains or odors? Has the sweater been altered or shown signs of shrinkage or stretching? Could you confirm the flat, unstretched pit-to-pit, length and sleeve measurements? Thank you!”
